Immediately following the now-historic VMAs moment when Nicki Minaj aired some grievances she had with Miley Cyrus live during an acceptance speech, Twitter was awash with conflicting theories.
The moment was genuine – how and why would such a thing be staged? The moment was false – everything on VMAs is scripted within an inch of its life.
But inside the production rooms during the show's taping, opinion was unanimous: Minaj's comments were not planned.
Sources from network tell PEOPLE that the pair's feud is a "very real thing." Watching the live feed, staffers' "jaws dropped" at the moment. "It wasn't staged in any way and caught everyone by surprise," another MTV source added. "After it happened, people made sure they didn't run into each other backstage because they weren't sure if there would be another confrontation."
